Hi Everyone,

This info is only good this week, July 7-11, 2003. I urge you to take action if you feel as strongly about early childhood education as I do. Thanks.

Call Congress and Urge them to Oppose Head Start Reauthorization

Background

Current law prohibits organizations who participate in Head Start programs from discriminating based on race, creed (i.e. religion), color, national origin, sex, political affiliation or beliefs, or disability. H.R. 2210, the reauthorization of Head Start, would erase these protections and explicitly authorize religious organizations to discriminate against Head Start teachers and parent volunteers on the basis of religion. In an effort to flood House phone lines with opposition, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), is providing a 800 call in number, starting July 7th beginning at 9 a.m. e.s.t.

Timing

The bill is expected to come to the floor for a full vote of the U.S. House of Representatives sometime next week.

Action

Ask your friends, coworkers, board, membership/activists and coalition partners to call their U.S. Representative and urge him or her to Oppose HR 2210, the Head Start reauthorization bill.

How it works

Once you have placed the call to 1-888-583-2809, you will be "prompted" to enter your home phone (with area code) and the zip code of your residence. This will identify your Member of Congress and connect you to his or her Washington, D.C. office.

Message

As a constituent, I urge Representative _________________ to vote NO on H.R. 2210, the School Readiness Act of 2003. H.R. 2210 would repeal civil rights protections, permitting taxpayer funded Head Start programs to discriminate on the basis of religion. If this bill becomes law, thousands of Head Start teachers and parent volunteers could lose their jobs.

Thank you and if you have any questions, please let me know.
